The Nitrogen Cycle

Most living organisms can't get nitrogen gas directly from the air but, all living organisms need it to survive. This is why we have something called the nitrogen cycle which helps living organisms by making nitrogen able to go into their bodies. this is how it works. The first step is that lightning changes some of the nitrogen gas in the air into nitrogen compounds which later falls down to earth as precipitation. Some plants then have bacteria living in their roots which convert the nitrogen gas from the atmosphere into a nitrogen compounds that plants can use. Animals then feed on plants (which have used the nitrogen gas from the soil) and the animal that ate the plant gets the nitrogen that it needs when the food (or in this case the plant) that it ate gets digested in its stomach. The animal that got the nitrogen gas then either (option 1) gets eaten by another animal so that the other animal gets the nitrogen that it needs or (option 2)  dies and is decomposed by decomposers. when it does this it returns the nitrogen to the soil. The final step of this cycle is that bacteria in the soil turn the nitrogen compounds into nitrogen gas and the nitrogen is returned to the atmosphere. The cycle then repeats.
